Long-time fan Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio One) has already acclaimed this album to be their best yet. Drawing on a wider canvas of styles than ever before, touching on spiritual jazz, deep African rhythms and Ethiopian modes, the Orchestra take their sound to new heights with stunning musicianship and virtuoso arrangements throughout. Having turned heads with two fine albums on Toronto label Do Right!, ‘Freedom No Go Die’ (2006, featuring their breakthrough single ‘Mista President’) and ‘Manifesto’ (2008), Strut are proud to announce the band’s hotly anticipated third album, ‘Rising Sun’. As a live unit, the Orchestra have become an in-demand fixture at venues and festivals worldwide. Drawing on the rough, raw grooves of the ‘60s and ‘70s and effortlessly fusing soul, jazz, Afro and latin rhythms within their music, they have moved forward the blueprint of Fela, Fania and the funk in entirely new ways, whilst keeping the vital analogue grit intact. Since their creation in 2002 in Ottawa, Canada, The Souljazz Orchestra have become one of the most potent bands in their field. MARIELLE RIVARD, shekere, gankogui, claves, guiro, basket rattle, goat-hoof rattle, bamboo chime, tambourine, bells, flexatone, vocals PHILIPPE LAFRENIÈRE, drums, congas, bongos, cuica, vocals PIERRE CHRÉTIEN, piano, vibraphone, marimba, harp, accordion, glass bottles, vocals RAY MURRAY, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, vocals ZAKARI FRANTZ, alto saxophone, flute, alto flute, clarinet, vocals While the Souljazz Orchestra stays true to its roots in soul and afro rhythms, on this new release they take a much jazzier approach, creating spiritually-charged, improv-heavy big-band music reminiscent of Salah Ragab, Pharoah Sanders, or Sun Ra, albeit with a heavy-driving, dancefloor-conscious edge. The Souljazz Orchestra will be releasing its first all-acoustic afrojazz album, entitled Rising Sun, on Strut Records, a label experiencing a good amount of buzz with its recent releases from Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics, Grandmaster Flash, Tony Allen & Jimi Tenor, as well as with its slew of top-notch reissues of historical dance music from around the world.
